All Stars tour the Cayman Islands

After years of talking about wanting to create a LoneStar Rugby Conference All Star team to go on tour, it finally came to fruition.  At the beginning of the season an All Star Selection Committee was formed to watch the players throughout the year.  Sixty players were invited to three successive combine try-outs and after the third, twenty-six players - representing nine different NSCRO schools - were named to the All Star roster (LSC Rattlesnakes) to embark on a tour to the Cayman Islands.

Here is their trip diary:

With a successful warm-up win against Alamo City, in San Antonio, TX on July 5, 2015, the team left for the Caymans on the following day.  It was all business for the first couple of days, with a couple training and whiteboard sessions before kicking off against the Cayman National U23 Rep side on Wednesday.  With temperatures in the high 80’s and humidity just as high, the Rattlesnakes jumped out to an early lead against the home team, but was quickly answered by Caymans.  The Rattlesnakes suffered a devastating blow when Michael Beiter separated his shoulder while scoring a try.  The halftime score was 17-17. It was a back and forth strategical match when the Rattlesnakes suffered yet another set back with Phil Maruta fracturing his femur.  The Rattlesnakes seemed determined scoring a late try in the fourth, but just did not have enough time, leaving the Caymans to win 36-29.  Dundy Walker was named "Man of the Match" during their spaghetti dinner.

The following day, the Rattlesnakes found themselves driving to the town of Hell, Grand Cayman, stopping along the way at a local beach to work out some of the soreness.  Their journey continued with a relaxing boat tour to the famous Stingray City, Rum Point, and Starfish Point.

Before they knew it, it was Friday.  It was back to training and whiteboard sessions, in preparation for the next match against a Cayman local side team.  Working on the Rattlesnakes' weaknesses identified from the first match and trying to gain a little cohesiveness, they were determined to pull off a win on Saturday.

With rain clouds present at kickoff, it was questionable if the game would happen, but just as quickly as the first six days had flown by, so did the storm clouds, leaving the weather to be extra humid.  Again, the Rattlesnakes struck first with the first score, in which would prove to be another back and forth tight game.  When the final whistle was blown, the Rattlesnakes appeared to be too much for the Cayman local team, winning the match 32-28.  A wonderful curry dish was served and Ryan Rackley, Captain, was named "Man of the Match".

On their last day in paradise, the team tried to buy some last minute souvenirs but, unfortunately, all of the shops and stores were closed on the island, except the ones in the airport.  So, the team used the downtime to pack, watch videos from the games, and reminisced of all the memories and friendships that they gained on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Looking back on the trip, it proved to be a huge success and accomplished most of the results we were looking for.  The main one being bringing together a group of talented ruggers, providing them with the highest level of coaching the LoneStar Conference has to offer, and letting them play a higher caliber and style of rugby that can only be found internationally.  Though the Rattlesnakes went 1-1 in international play, the skills and lessons they learned deemed to be way more valuable which we hope they will continue to learn and take the lessons and intensity of play back to their home clubs and lift the entire level of play in the LoneStar Conference.
